A rich and comforting German dish featuring caramelized onions, creamy filling, and a buttery crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (Swiss or Gruyère)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, softened butter, sour cream, and salt to form a smooth dough. Press the dough into a pie pan.
  3. In a large skillet, sauté the thinly sliced onions over medium heat until soft and translucent.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  5. Spread the cooked onions over the pie crust.
  6. Pour the egg mixture over the onions.
  7. Sprinkle with shredded cheese.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes until set and golden brown.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

For the best flavor, allow the onions to caramelize well while cooking. Serve warm, but it’s also delicious at room temperature.
