This easy homemade chili combines ground meat, beans, and spices for a comforting dish that’s perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (or turkey/chicken)
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional toppings: shredded cheese, sour cream, green onions

Instructions

  1. In a large pot over medium heat, cook the ground meat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion is translucent.
  3. Stir in the chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper, cooking for 1-2 minutes to release the spices’ flavors.
  4. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and beans, raise the heat, and bring to a simmer.
  5. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Notes

For a thicker chili, let it simmer longer; for a soupy chili, add a bit of broth or water. Letting the chili rest allows the flavors to meld better.
